Default 95 w/ 2.2 engine, What Starter Do I Have?

Hi everyone. I have a 1995 camry w/ the 2.2 engine with 220k miles. I believe the starter is bad. Turn key and sometimes nothing happens...no sounds, no clicks. I replaced the battery and problem is still there. Given the age of the engine, I was thinking the starter has gone bad.

One problem is that I went to rockauto.com and there seems to be multiple starters to choose from. Another problem is that I am pretty far away from the car and I wanted to purchase it online and then bring it to the car to replace it. Is there a way to tell (e.g., VIN number) which starter that my car has in it without actually being near the car?

Thanks,
SR

Make sure the battery cable terminals, terminal connections to the cable, battery ground connection at the chassis are OK.

Typically issues here are corroded battery terminal connections, bad terminal or ground connection.

You want to make sure battery power is making it to the starter assy.

If everything is OK with the cables, etc and the starter assy is the problem it is usually the starter solenoid not the starter motor. The solenoid is bolted to the starter motor.

Inside the solenoid are a set of large electrical contacts that open and close to power the starter motor. Over time they burn due to the arcing when closing/opening.

The starter motor is typically OK.

The contacts can be replaced with the starter still on the engine, easy job if one knows what they are doing (about 1 hr). The Toyota dealer sells the contacts (about $35). If going this route take the VIN number with you to make sure you get the right part (call ahead to make sure they have the parts in stock). The internet should have posts on how to change the contacts.

Or the complete solenoid can be replaced, Rockauto also sells these.

This problem with the solenoid contacts (if it is a starter problem) is extremely common. The odds of bad starter motor are slim.

Rockauto lists a lot of starters. Much of the verbiage is extra from the manufacturer, there should be only one starter for this engine. You can always call Rockauto and ask.

The original starter would be Nippon Denso. The starters listed are mix of new and re-manufactured. I might buy the Denso 2800171 or Bosch SR3259X rebuilt units listed.

Suggest staying away from chain store rebuilds as these can be junk right out of the box.

My money is on the contacts but if your miles away buy one of the rebuilt units and just change out the complete starter unit.
