Automatic Transmission shifted to park at 40 mph
How does the Aisin A540E transmission in a 1997 V6 Camry respond if the shifter is slammed into Park while moving at 40 MPH? Does the parking pawl just ratchet (like Ford automatics do) or will it actually engage?
This is not a hypothetical question - I can tell you that the transmission did survive with no apparent damage; rain slick road, uncertain if that made any difference.
I'll spare you the details behind this boneheaded move, but this is a serious question. I really need to determine what the A540E is suppose to do when this happens.

Don't know.
If the pawl engaged the trans would survive but pawl would shear off. The pawl is a stamped piece of metal. Try placing the trans in park and determine if park still works.
If so, then things may be OK, if not you have your answer.
If you drop the pan you may be able to see the pawl or of if broke find the part in the pan.

I had Ford Taurus engine into reverse at 50. Like you say - don't ask. It simply shut down and car kept rolling, slowing downhill. Turned key, started, on we went.
Of course, that trannie died on me next year. Not sure if it was relevant.
