Default Blown Differential~ HELP!!

I have a 1997 Camry with an automatic transmission. A few days ago I was on the highway, when I heard a noise. I then realize that the engine was racing, but the car wasn't going. Pulled over and realized that all my gears were shot, including park. Heard a grinding noise when I put the car in park and it started to roll down hill. Had the car towed to a transimission repair shop. They tell me that the differential is blown and they will need to drop the transmission to fix it. And that it will cost $1400 just to fix the differential, on top of $400 to drop and re-install the transmission. At work I was talking to someone about the problem and he told me that the trans doesn't need to be dropped to change the diff and all that needs to be done is pull the axle out. Is this true and does $1400 sound outrageous?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Default RE: Blown Differential~ HELP!!

To get to the differential inside the transaxle you've got to take apart the entire transaxle. You cant do that while its still in the car. $1400 sounds like a really good deal to me. Just pray that the only thing that is broken is the differential, and if it isn't, get the checkbook out or sell the car.
