Question engine cuts out while driving then hard to start

Hi - I have a 95 camry 5 speed manual transmission, 4 cyl, DX with 285,000 miles.
A few days ago I was at a stop sign, when I took off the car cut out and then immediately came back on. Later in the afternoon I was driving on the highway and the car just cut out, then suddenly it came back on. This happened about 3 times in a row. When I made it home I shut it off. Then it wouldnt start. I let it sit awhile and after trying several times to start it - it did finally start. I drove the car a few miles and then it cut out completely.
It wouldnt restart and I towed it to a garage but they didnt have any ideas. The garage looked at the distributor but couldnt find anything. It started up for them and they gave me back the car. I ran it today. It didnt cut out while driving but it was finicky on starting a few times. Any help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Kevin

Check for a hot ign spark, spark should be able to gap 1/2 inch.

Maybe failing fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator. These systems are no monitored by the engine computer self test system.

Thanks Joey
How do I test the hot ign spark? Any chance it could also be the fuel filter? I know they are supposed to be lifetime fuel filters but the car is quite old.
Thanks Kev

Hi Joey
another quick thought for you. Any chance the timing belt could be failing? Would it cause these types of symptoms? It hasnt been changed in a very long time. Well over 60K miles (more like double that).
Thanks
Kev

I am getting spark and I also checked the timing with a timing light.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You need a pressure gauge to check fuel pressure.

The AutoZone website may have info in the sites vehicle repair guide section for this year, model and make of car.
