Default EVAP issues...

Hello everyone!

My girlfriend's 2002 camry LE has it's check engine light due to an EVAP error. I think the code is P0442. Because of this, it will not pass NYS inspection, otherwise, it would not be an issue.

Today I went under the car to hopefully find a loose hose related to the gas tank/ charcol canister and sadly found nothing. Everything had common wear and tear but nothing was dried out, loose, obviously problematic, etc.

After hours of research the common causes came to be:

A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
Other small leak in EVAP system
Faulty vent o-ring seal

-
With that said, the gas cap is secure and original.

Has anyone had luck fixing this issue without going to a shop? I ask because we don't have the money to go to the shop because we're college kids. It also says to utilize a smoke machine which to me makes since, smoke puffing out of where it's leaking, but where would this be inputted?

Is the usual (beside the gas cap) problem the charcoal canister? If so, what is the simpliest way to replace it? It looked like I'll need to drop the gas tank after removing a long list of other parts....

Thanks for the help in advance!

This is a slow leak as opposed to a large leak which would have its own code.

One more place to check is the fuel filler tube. See link below:

You might isolate the canister from the tank to pin point which side of the system the leak is on, tank or canister.

The PDF below is for a different engine but will show what areas to check for leaks.
