Default evap leak on top of the gas tank

i tried takeing my 93 camry le 4cyl in for smog said it wont pass smog because there is a evap leak on top of the gas tank. i smell the gas every once in awhile by there rear passenger door. anyone had this problem? what would be the leak on top of the gas tank? my guess it wouls be the acess cover to the fuel pump. i had my other mechanic did a smoke test and the smoke was comming from above the tank and that it was goin to be 300 just to drop the tank and put it back up. thanks.

Most likely it is a problem with the fuel tank filler or vent line system.

The filler line directs fuel into the tank. The vent line directs air out of the tank and into the upper part of the filler line when gas is being added to the tank.

There are rubber hoses connecting the tank and steel lines which can fail, the lines have also been known to rust through.

Either problem would not be uncommon.

The access cover is to the pump but it does not have access to the other lines. There is no way to access these lines without dropping the tank which should not be a time consuming job.
