Default MCV20R Over charging

Hi all

I had a bit of a search and couldn't really see an answer.

As it states I have an AUS delivered MCV20R with a 1MZFE. I had an issue that the charge light came on the car. I drove for 10kms and stopped at a carpark. We gave the alt a calibrated tap and the light went off.

I enjoyed a day snowboarding. On returning to the car tried to drive home and the light came back on. I stopped 30km and borrowed a volt meter from a mechanic and the car was charging at 16 volts.

I limped the car a further 100kms and pulled over to check the battery at the mechanics advice. I could barley touch it and you could smell the sulfur and hear the battery boiling.

After some advice from an auto elec. I returned to the car the next day and replaced the alternator. I found to that the battery was dead and had spilt some acid so I replaced that too.

Started the car up and this time had 19 volts. Im a bit stumped as all fuses are good.

any input would be appreciated.

you replaced the alternator.already and still 19 volts ..something wrong here ..was it a reco or brand new

have you also got a new battery

this is a V6
check the regulator again . see repair manual note below

.does that voltage ever drop to spec ..it should .what voltage when the headlights on ... reading has to fluctuate

.back to that auto electrician if not

only other thing is a live draw on that circuit
I have found that light will come on for any charge/battery fault
repair manual a 1MZFE.
Standard voltage:
12.7 – 12.9 V at 200C (680F)

Repair manual a 1MZFE.
Check the charging circuit as follows:
With the engine running from idling to 2,000 rpm,
check the reading on the ammeter and voltmeter.
Standard amperage:
10 A or less
Standard voltage:
14.0 – 15.0 V at 25°C (77°F)
13.5 – 14.3 V at 115°C (239°F)
If the voltmeter reading is more than standard voltage,
replace the voltage regulator.

Thanks for the reply dirty hands.

I got it sorted. I did some reading after posting this thread and worked out the alt light works.

After posting this Iwent out and with the battery disconnected and after the 1hr drive home the battery was showing 19v

this seemed odd. SO I connected the battery and started the car, with no alt. Light didn't come on. As I expected

I then connected just the ALt light and feed back plug. Started the car. I got the alt light. As expected.

I then connected power to the Alt. Started the car and got no light. So according to the car everything was good.

I then rang a friend and borrowed his voltmeter. Got it home and on the car and the system was showing 13.9 volts. Right on the money.

Turns out the new alt fixed the problem, the volt meter I had taken to do the swap was faulty.

thanks for the help
