Hi - I have a 95 camry 4cyl manual tran,
While doing an oil change I noticed the passenger side CV Boot is ripped.
Is that something I can fix myself of does the whole axle need to be replaced?
Is it safe to drive it with the rip?

A ripped boot will allow grease to fly out, and debris and water to enter.

You can replace only the boot. There are split and non-split boots available.

Replacing a non-split boot requires taking the axle off and apart.

The split boot can be replaced on car. If going this route check if Toyota offers a split boot as not all split boots are of the same quality.

Or can replace axle.

Car is safe to drive but will lose grease, etc eventually causing joint failure. You can wrap tape around boot to keep water, etc. out until repaired. Have used 2 inch wide clear packing tape.

 

I would recommend replacing the whole axle. This is just my opinion, but who knows what kind of dirt and debris has now gotten into the joint. A little bit of dirt will destroy that joint pretty quick. If money is an option (which it usually is) replace the boot and pack some new grease in there. Who knows, it might last a while.

 

Thanks for the advice guys. Will definitely wrap some tape around it while I decide how much money I want to spend on this. I can see where the new axle is better piece of mind since I have no idea how long its been ripped and how much debris is in there.

 

Typically what is available are rebuilds whose quality is dubious.

Rockauto lists a new EMPI/EMPIRE passenger side axle for $65. Check internet for 5% off discount code. Given the Toyota boot may be $40 and to install a conventional boot requires removing the axle, a new axle may be the way to go. Other split boots brand don't hold up.

The OEM toyota cv boot kit for the inner and outer is either $60.71 or $54.43. For just the inner is either $39.21 or $33.98. I work for a Toyota dealer and I looked up the prices for you. I came up with a couple diff part numbers without having the vin #.

Wow - thanks for all the great advice and pricing help. Seems I will attempt the axle. For the cost of the axle vs. the boot - it would be nice to know I have a new axle since its a 95 camry.
