Water pump issue
Hi, I have a 2001 Camry LE, 4 cylinder, 250K miles. The water pump bearing failed in a spectacular fashion, and the impeller scraped against the inside of the pump housing.
My question, can I go ahead and install a new pump?
I would think pump efficiency might be down a bit, but I don't have experience with this failure. Thoughts?

Don’t know for sure. If I needed the car ASAP I would bolt on a pump and rotate the impeller to check for binding in case some housing material was dug up. Once the car was together would check the temp gauge.
If I didn’t need the car soon I would replace the housing as its low cost and the water pump being off the job would be easy.
The centrifugal pump impeller to housing clearance is supposed to be very close. The closer the better as to flow and to minimize other problems. The tapered housing shape is also important which has now been changed by damage.
I assume though the water pump flow is large and the T-Stat is restricting this flow down significantly. Like a large hose with a small nozzle. Here perhaps if the engine is going flat out in very high ambient temps the damage would show up in higher coolant temp. How much, don't know.
