Default 1990 Camry

I am new to this so I don’t know if this is how it works but I have a 1990 Camry that will not start. Turns over fine and seems to work sometimes. It shut off while driving. Have checked the efi fuse, distributor cap, ignition coil, among other things. I cannot find the problem at all can anyone help? Car is not getting spark but is getting fuel I assume because I can smell it when turning over.

Check ign coil. Check the two pickup coils inside the distributor.

I also got a code on a scanner "IGT or IGF ignition system fault" not sure what either of those mean have you heard of anything like that?

IGT or IGF ignition system are connections between ECU and igniter.

The year of car has a self contained diagnostic system which outputs numerical numbers via flashing of the check engine light. The codes are then linked to a diagnostic chart.

Do a search of this site to find posts on accessing the system. The system was used up to 1995 on 4 cylinder.

Find small black box in engine compartment perhaps mounted on a strut tower. Open box to find exposed electrical connections. Find the TE1 and E1 terminals.

Turn ign switch on. Use electrical wire to connect the above two terminals.

The check engine light will start to flash. If no codes light will have a steady flash.

If codes (codes are 2 numbers) are stored they will output as flashes. As in 2 flashes, pause, 4 flashes, pause = code 24. If more then one code is stored the lowest number code will output first.

When all codes are outputted the codes will repeat.

When done, disconnect terminals then turn ign switch off.

Get the code(s).

Also check the wiring between the igniter and ECU for shorts and open circuits. Check the harness plugs..

Already checked all of that. Code is 1 4 and I am hoping it is bad igniter instead of ECU. The white wire in igniter was putting out 6.5 volts so I think it’s bad. Am going to replace it and pray I don’t have to do the ecu next. Wiring harness checks out and puts out proper volts everywhere I accessed.

I have a Haynes book for this car which is how I figured out the code. It says troubled area “igniter circuit (+b, IGT, IGF) / igniter / ECU

No IGF signal to ECM for a set quantity of IGT signals.

IGF wire is White/Red.
