Default Best Practices for Window Tinting on Cars

Hi everyone,

I’m considering getting my car windows tinted and wanted to gather some advice. I’m curious about the differences between various tint percentages and how they affect visibility, heat reduction, and privacy. Are there specific types of films that are more durable or resistant to fading over time?

Also, what are the legal restrictions in different regions regarding window tint darkness?

I’ve heard some DIY kits work well, but professional installation might be worth it for longevity.

Any tips on choosing the right installer or brand would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your guidance!

Don't know.

The Toyotanation.com website no doubt has had this discussion.

Reddit has tinted window and auto detailing groups. Would start here!

Every state has their own laws on window tent. Do an internet search.

My opinion is the DIY learning curve is too steep to allow getting the job done right the first time. Too many ways to make a mistake and it takes skill to get a good job, meaning practice.

Here are the best practices for car window tinting:
Know Local Laws: In Quebec (including Saint-Jérôme), front side windows must allow at least 70% visible light transmission (VLT). Rear windows and rear windshield can be darker, but always verify current SAAQ regulations.
Choose Quality Film: Use high-quality ceramic or carbon tint films—they offer better heat rejection, UV protection, and durability without interfering with electronic signals (e.g., GPS, cell service).
Professional Installation: Hire a certified, reputable installer to avoid bubbles, peeling, or poor adhesion. DIY kits often lead to subpar results.
Curing Time: Avoid rolling down windows for 3–7 days post-installation to let the adhesive fully cure.
Clean Properly: After curing, clean tinted windows with ammonia-free cleaners and soft microfiber cloths to prevent scratching or discoloration.
Warranty: Ensure the film and installation come with a warranty (often lifetime for quality products).Following these steps ensures legal compliance, longevity, and optimal performance of your window tint.

I love nicely tinted windows and I'll get what tint I can so long as it is legal.
I would recomend using ceramic tint. From what I know, there is ceramic tint and metallic. I would choose the ceramic because it does not interfere with antennas that may be routed through the rear window.
