Default 1989 Camry Surging issue

Hey all, just want to say its very cool that you have this forum going here. I love toyota's but like everything made eventually it will fall apart.

My buddie has a 1989 Toyota Camry with a 4 banger under the metal lid.

Symptoms: This camry has been running good but needs a little love. Lately it has been surging... we think its valves but don't know. It will catch and throw you back in the seat. Its driveable but we don't know for how long.

I want to help him out and will run a compression test and hook up the ODB2 reader... I think to it if it has the connection.. that might be to early.

Worse case, we'll just throw another engine in.

Can anyone here give their expertise or findings of the engine surging and catching? Injectors?

Kind regards,

Mikesta

Does the engine stumble when the gas pedal is pressed?
