I can't say the mechanic is wrong but there are several ignition systems installed on these cars. Is yours distributorless, external coil, internal coil? The reason I ask is mine is an internal coil breakerless and it has a condenser (capacitor). If yours is the same you may have a condenser and it won't hurt to remove the distributor cap, rotor, ignition coil dust cover tolook for a condenser. Theother thing I can think of is your fuel pump relay is not holding. The way to check that would be to attach a test light at the fuel pump and see if it goes out when the engine stalls.Other possibility is maybe the ignition switch.

 

I am 95% sure it has an internal coil. It was actually one of the early Camry's from Japan if that makes any difference. I really appreciate your help. I have heard the ignition switch idea from another friend.
