Cruise control not working after battery & brake light switch change
I have a 2002 Camry LE. The car recently died. The garage replaced the battery and found a stuck brake light switch to be the culprit. They replaced the brake light switch as well. The cruise control, which was working before the car died, is no longer working. When the car is stationary, the cruise control indicator light turns on and stays on. However, when the vehicle is in motion, the cruise control indicator light flickers, with the light staying off more than on. The cruise control does not engage when I attempt to set the speed above 50 mph. The garage tried to program and check the cruise settings using a Snap-On tool that attaches to the OBD-II port. Everything checked out fine on the Snap-On tool. The reprogramming and testing steps have not helped. The cruise control indicator light flickers, and the cruise control system does not engage. Does this imply that the new brake light switch is faulty?
Flickering or blinking?
Is the check engine light on?
Did the shop check for trouble codes? The cruise system may have its own trouble codes.
Are you able to set a cruise speed below 50? If so does the vehicle hold that speed when the cruise light is flickering or does the cruise turn off?
Any correlation between moving the steering wheel and this flicking issue? There is wiring connector in the steering wheel column that can cause issues.

Flickering or blinking? I would say flickering since the on and off sequences are irregular.
Is the check engine light on? The check engine light was ON before the battery was replaced. It has not come back on after replacing the battery. The check engine light was on due to a small emission leak.
Are you able to set a cruise speed below 50? No
If so, does the vehicle hold that speed when the cruise light is flickering or does the cruise turn off? The vehicle does not hold the speed under any condition.
Any correlation between moving the steering wheel and this flicking issue? There does not appear to be any relation between steering movement and the status of the cruise control indicator light.
Don't know.
The indicator light connects directly to the engine computer not a switch.
The brake switch is two switches in one. One switch is normally closed for cruise control. If the brake pedal is pushed this switch opens and cruise turns off. The other switch is normally open. When the pedal is pushed this switch closes and the brake lights come on. Have someone watch the brake lights as you press the pedal.
Could be a speed sensor. The system uses one to tell the MPH.
Any other indications of electrical issues such as other flickering lights?
The cruise system does have its own diagnostic trouble code system.
There doesn't appear to be any ability to program the system.
