I have a 2003 XV30 Camry with a 2.4 2AZ-FE engine.

It is in very good condition and has been regularly maintained. Runs very well, good fuel consumption etc.

One smallish issue is that it likes to crank for an excessive length of time before starting. Slightly better when warm, (but can be really bad when it is very hot).

My mechanic (who services mainly Toyotas) thinks that the problem is to do with the ignition switch - he says that they can have connection problems on start which can cause this.

I have stripped and cleaned the ignition switch, and after close examination tried to slightly bend the contacts to ensure a more positive connection. This has made NO difference.

Combined with a lack of long journeys and/or high speed use, this is now starting to give me battery problems which I believe is down to the excessive drain on the battery when starting.

In the last month I replaced the very worn out brushes in the starter motor. This made the motor turn much faster that it had been, but has made no difference to the core problem.

Any ideas?

Have you checked for ign spark when cranking engine?

 

No. Is it possible that the plugs don't spark sometimes when cranking, given that once started, the engine runs perfectly?

Don't know.

Your mechanic did state the issue might be with the ign switch. If not starting checking for ign spark, The engine computer controls the ign coils.

If the car has an immobilizer this can disable the fuel injectors.

Need to find out what is not working, fuel or ign system.
