Loud screech when cold
I have a 2003 Camry 6 cyl. When it is cold in the morning, my car makes a high pitched screeching noise whenever I turn the wheel. The screech is very loud if you are outside the car, definitely masking the sound of the engine. Occasionally, the steering wheel will fill a bit jerky. I have checked the power steering fluid and the levels of the fluid are not low when the engine is cold. Also, the water pump went bad so I had it fixed and had other fix during that visit. This occurred during the end of December and beginning of January. The serpentine belt got replaced as part of the whole process. I have read that a loose belt could cause the problem. Would my belt be loose because it was recently replaced or is this something that is normal with any car. This does not happen all the time; it seems to happen whenever it is cold in the mornings as once the car is going there is normally no problems what so ever.
Can not state for sure.
The belt should have a self tensioner to automatically take the slack out. The tensioner could be bad resulting in slipping. Take it back to the shop that replaced it and have them check it.
Given the belt has slipped on the pulleys it can now be glazed causing even more slipping. Might replace the belt.
Can also be the power steering pump starting to freeze up. It the PS pulley is starting to freeze up, the belt will slip.
Or any other item driven by the pulley. Again have the shop check each driven pulley to check for binding.
With the belt off the shop can hand rotate the pump to check for binding.
