Unhappy My Car Turned Off on the Highway

Hello, I am new here, so if I am posting in the wrong section, I apologize. I don't know much about cars, but this seems like a good place to start.

Basically, I was on an exit ramp today and my car just turned off. I ended up pulling over and was able to turn it back on (it cut off a couple of times right after I started it back up), and it seems to be running fine again. Any ideas as to what might cause something like that or what I should check? It's a 1992 model with ~214,000 miles.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am a delivery driver and I have no idea what I would do if I didn't have a car to drive (can't exactly afford to take it to a mechanic).

i believe i was coasting, but i'm not sure. the engine just cut off (as if i had turned the key), the radio was still on. i'm not sure, but i think it's a 4 cylinder.

Default My Car Turned Off on the Highway

Hello, I had a simular situation with my 4Runner. All my belts were OK. So, I did a quick check on the alternator. I started the 4Runner, then, I disconnected the positive (+) terminal on the battery and the engine died right away. This showed me that the car was running on the battery only. The problem was that the alternator was not charging the battery and not maintaining the electrical system. I went and got a rebuild alternator and did the same test and the 4runner did not die. Just my experience, your could be different. I hope this helps.
