My cars gear select just recently started just being able to freely move when in gear, I have an automatic and when I put it in drive I don’t have to push the button to move the selector I can just move it between the gears. The car goes in all the gears and drives

 

Determine if the shift button or its linkage is stuck in the release position. The trans itself has a detent cam system on the trans shifter arm coming out of the trans but the P/R/L lockout is in in cars hand operated gear shifter system.
