Default Catalytic converter

Catalytic converter
98 Camry 2.2
Does this Camry have 1 or 2 converters? Only O2 sensor I see is the one by the exhaust manifold. There is not anything that resembles a converter from the flexibile pipe back to the muffler. Runs extremely rich .

A car built to California emissions may have a different emissions setup. Check the cars factory stickers under the hood and on side of drivers door to determine what emissions standard it was built to, federal or California.

The car has two bolt together sections of exhaust pipe. One section (call it section 2) goes from the far rear muffler to the flange on the section of pipe ahead of it (call this section 1). Section 1 bolts to the exhaust manifold.

The second converter if present would be on section 1 in a location just forward of where the pipe bolts to section 2.

The O2 or A/F sensor that actually controls fuel ratio is the first sensor on the exhaust system. Any others are there only to monitor the converters performance.
