Default New to Toyota--quest. about late 90s Camry/Avalon

Hello all. I have never owned a Toyota and am considering purchasing either a 97-01 Camry or a first-gen Avalon. I like the size and standard safety features of the Avalon (side air bags and beefier sides in '98) but the engine is a little too thirsty and I'm worried about the sludge issue. Plus, since I do my own repairs, a second cylinder bank is always a pain. Comparing a 4 cyl. Camry, when did side airbags become an option? Also, when did Toyota start to make clearance engines? Is there anything else I should consider specific to these models? Thanks a bunch.

Thought 1998 was the year side airbags become an option.

The same 4 cylinder was used through 2001 and was non-interference.

If concerned about sludge pull a valve cover and take a look.

The Camry frame was updated in 1998 to improve cabin protection. The Avalon shared the same frame.

You might review posts for this Generation (4) at the Toyotanation website, this will give you an idea of what fails over time.
