Default Transmission's Stuck

I was driving down interstate, trans started jerking from one heartgear to the other, slipping into redline, and check engine light came on momentarily. I pulled over and teams is stuck in gear?? It'll start up like I'm neutral but if I hit the accelerator in any selection (even P,R, and N) it pulls forward wtf

Year of car, engine type (v-6 or 4-cylinder). Take it's an automatic transmission.

Might be a stuck shift valve. The trans can be shifted by both electric solenoid controlled by the computer and manually moved valves via the shifter.

As to what YOU can do.

Check trans fluid level and condition.

Check for trans/engine trouble codes via the OBDII port.

On the off chance, check the shifter cable going to the lever on the trans to make sure its moving in sync with the shifter lever in the car or its broken off.

Also try all gear positions in case the shifter is no longer in sync as a drive gear may actually now be neutral.

You could remove the battery cable for say 10 minutes to try to reset the computer. But get any codes read first. If you disconnect the battery, the computer will need to relearn what the idle speed is and thus for a time have idle issues.

Beyond this it may be time for a transmission shop.

I had a similar issue once where I put it in R and it was neutral, then in neutral it was reverse, then Drive was neutral, it was all weird, I changed my transmission fluid and the problem disappeared, I used this:
https://www.searchforparts.com/oil-c...ry-2.4l-2az-fe (if your engine code is 2AZ-FE)
and
https://www.searchforparts.com/oil-c...2.4l-b-2az-fxe (if your engine code is [B] 2AZ-FXE)

this helped solve it, worth a try, but you definitely need to go have a mechanic check it out, if it is another issue and they need to change the tranny fluid you might as well use the synthetic I mentioned, especially at that mileage. Also check for leaks, my Camry would have lasted way longer but I let an oil leak get bigger and bigger and the oil level dropped all at once and the engine froze. (my fault, Camrys last forever if taken care of).
